RIP Leonard Nimoy - LLAP

Nerdgasms
@ DAN-isms.com

Today we have lost a small piece of greatness.

Leonard Nimoy your presentation of the character Spock, a half-cast who was too emotional for Vulcan and too logical for earth, showed me that amazing friendships were possible even though you’re different, even when there doesn’t seem to be anywhere you belong, even when people tell you they don’t want you.

As a German Australian who never fit in, who never thought like the people around him, that gave me a lot of hope. It made me understand that sometimes “normal” is overrated. Greatness comes from rising above adversity, from accepting and embracing your difference. Leonard Nimoy personified that greatness.

RIP Spock, you will be missed.
L.L.A.P.

Net Neutrality has major victory

Nerdgasms
@ DAN-isms.com

If you don't really follow the happenings on the internet you may not have heard that there was a major American discussion of creating internet tiers.  In short if you were a service provider of some variety you would have to choose whether you pay from premium internet or crappy crappy super slow speed internet, meaning that new start-ups could be priced out of the market... also there was some talk about policing the internet in a way that was super scarey.

Anyway, it's 1:30 AM and I'm dying to go to bed - but if you want to know why Net Neutrality is awesome and how it just got a win, check out this article here:

Smart-phone-watches. Yay or Nay?

Nerdgasms
@ DAN-isms.com

When I was a kid I used to watch futuristic TV shows where people would talk into their watch, and it was awesome.  As I got older and tech advances kept happening I kept waiting for cool watches that you could talk into, but it never really happened.  When mobile phones were invented the watch started to seem like a more and more unrealistic idea - the screens are really small and aside from being able to be carried on your wrist so that you never really need to worry about forgetting it... why would you choose to use it over a phone?

Well this is the Pebble's latest incarnation and their argument on why a smart-watch should be your next purchase.

OMG! It's Dawson and Starbuck in the new blood-soaked adult take on Power Rangers

Nerdgasms
@ DAN-isms.com

I don't watch Power Rangers, I've never liked Power Rangers, you normally couldn't pay me to watch it... unless of course you placed as the central characters James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackhoff. Mind you, I'm also the guy who doesn't understand why there isn't a standalone Battlestar Galactica Origins: Star Buck series.

If you are ready for a very dark, totally not child-like Power Rangers, watch this:

Would you have played a game that is essentially Arkham Asylum + Mordor with vampires?

Nerdgasms
@ DAN-isms.com

The only thing I love more than zombie games, are vampire games - mainly because I'm gaga for vampires.  No I don't mean 'sparkle-town' happy vampires, I mean the visceral "rip your face off and look good doing it" vampires of old.  While the greatest vampire game of all time is Bloodlines, there was one other decent vampire saga and that was the Legacy of Kain franchise.

Legacy's failing was that it wasn't dark enough.  While it had a great story behind it, you didn't engage with the character in the same way that you did with Bloodlines and I think that's mainly because it's so focused on hack and slash.  However, this was all going to be turned around in the games latest incarnation which was unfortunately cancelled.

If you watch the video above you will see leaked footage of game play from Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun and if you watch it you will notice very familiar combat and architecture, similarly to the Batman Arkham games as well as Shadow of Mordor.  All the ways that the Kain series fell down look like they were overcome in this version... but it was canned after three years of development because the people at the helm felt it would not meet sales expecations.

I personally am gutted, this looked great!  What do you think, would you have played it?

Can game developers stop game dooshbaggery?

Nerdgasms
@ DAN-isms.com

If you've participated in an MMO of any variety you've met incredible D-bags. You know who I'm talking about,  gamers who feel safe behind their screen and therefore spew vitriol onto any number of gamers for any number of reasons.  I was a guild and raid leader in World of Warcraft for a number of years and quit after I couldn't deal with the incredibly number of turds you eventually ran into when people didn't need to earn a guild spot anymore.

So is there anything that can be done about it?

If you're interested, check out this article by PC Gamer that shows some of the tricks developers are using to curb online vitriol.

The greatest zombie game of all time get's a revamp

Nerdgasms
@ DAN-isms.com

Ask anyone and they will tell you, I am a zombie nut and have been quietly planning for the zombie apocalypse since I was like eight.  I know that sounds weird but my mother used to be heavily medicated when I was a kid which meant part of my childhood involved my mum not knowing who I was while shambling around my house in a semi-comatose state while making  low moaning noises....

Yeaaaaah.

Anyway I love zombie survival games, not mindless run-and-gun blow all the zombie's away games, but the "you need to think, plan and build to survive against the inevitable threat of the horde."  Without a doubt the game to do this best is State of Decay.  Yes Dead Island is a close second, I haven't played Dying Light and I know DayZ  is massively popular... but DayZ fails in all kinds of ways eg:
  • If you can'tat least pick up a stick or a rock and defend yourself, the game fails. One of my only evolutionary advantages is the ability to use tools, the zombies are already undead - let's make the fight at least remotely even.
  • If I can't kick down a door just because it's locked, but a zombie can walk through a door you've closed behind you, it fails.  Either we can both open barred doors, or neither of us of can.
  • I have jumped off about a billion stairs in my life and never broken my leg once, but can't seem to do the same in DayZ.

Sorry, I'm ranting.

State of Decay does "think and survive the zombie threat" better than anything else out there, with it's only true failure being a lack of multi-player support.  It invented zombie open world base building, crafting and adds a tower defense mechanism that almost all other Z-focused games fail at.  Short version - I've logged huuuundreds of hours on this game and it's expansions and they are all receiving a massive overhaul thanks to the State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition.

Find out more about the new version here.

The binding of Isaac explained

Nerdgasms
@ DAN-isms.com

The Binding of Isaac  was a smash hit on Steam (check it out here) but it left players with a lot of questions.  If you haven't seen the game before it's pretty dark and twisted about a small boy named Isaac who's mother takes christian zealotry to all new levels when the voice of god orders her to kill her son.  Isaac escapes through a trap door in the floor to fight a host of monsters, using his tears as projectiles.

Like I said, dark and twisted and obviously based on the biblical tale of Abraham being asked to sacrifice his son Isaac.  Clearly this game generated a lot of heated debate, but what is the game really about?  That is open to some interpretation.

The video above done by Game Theory gives a pretty impressive rundown on the game and what it all signifies so if you enjoyed the game give it a view - if you haven't played the game, get it now, it's awesome.

Social Media Beyond Death - Facebook Legacy Accounts

Nerdgasms
@ DAN-isms.com

When my mum passed the single most important thing for me (aside from looking after her affairs) was getting a hold of her family photo albums.  Unfortunately as I was born in an age without cellphones and where camera's were insanely expensive, I had no photo's of my childhood and my family - they all belonged to mum.

Today, printed photo's are going the way of the dinosaur and Facebook is probably your closest thing to a photo album, so the idea that if one the people you care about passes and you could possibly not get access to those precious memories is a frightening one.  Facebook has solved this be creating the Legacy Contact function which will essentially allow you to will your Facebook to someone in the event of your untimely (or timely) demise.  It hasn't been rolled out everywhere yet but if you want to know how to set it up, see this article here.

How would you like a make-believe boyfriend?

Nerdgasms
@ DAN-isms.com

I used to have a mate that could never seem to get a girlfriend. It became a running gag in my little pack of soulless-human-beings that if he ever got one, the balance of the universe would be unhinged and we'd all get dumped by our girlfriends.  Eventually said friend did get several  girlfriends... but we would never, ever, meet them and they would never be available to hang out.  Short version, they didn't exist - at least not in the realm that the rest of us occupied.

Now, if you are struggling to find a true love, but would prefer for this particularly foible to remain private, there's an app that can help you - the invisible boyfriend app.  If you want to know more about how it works read this piece by Jennifer Wright as she tests it out.

How would you like to play laser tag at home?

Nerdgasms
@ DAN-isms.com

Lyteshot was a kickstarter project that was built around the idea of bringing customisable laser tag into the home. Well it succeeded in meeting its funding and is now it's commercially available.

The game uses something called a Lyter which looks and works like a wii remote and works as both the firing device and a potential target for adversaries.  You also attach to yourself a "puck" which also acts as a target, all of these connect to your mobile which updates a cloud that is keeping score of the game.

So how's it work? Like this:

Hitman is one of the greatest gaming franchises of all time and I can personally say I've played every version of this game that has come out. Wow it's about to recieve a big screen revival.  I say revival because a Hitman movie featuring Timothy Olyphant already came out some time ago... and was killed by it's script.  Serioiusly, Timothy was amazing in it and then the later half of the movie just goes to hell in handbag and you're left wondering what happened.

The second attempt at the movie looks far, far sexier than the first.  Check out the trailer and see what you think.

Spoilers! New Secrets for Star Wars 7

Nerdgasms
@ DAN-isms.com

Star Wars 7 fills me with glee and dread because all I want the twats over in Hollywood to do is build movies based on the tried and true novels that revolve around the Star Trek universe (Thrawn trilogy, please - make - the Thrawn - trilogy), yet Disney seems determined to destroy my childhood and adult dreams by turning Star Wars into Twilight vs Hunger Games + Jedi, or in other words was rumored to be taking the worst element from the Jedi Search novels (all the Jedi kids) and building the movie around that... or are they?

Breaking Bad meets Star Trek

It looks like the good people at Paramount have Bryan Cranston in sight to play a part in the next Star Trek movie. Film Divider had this to say:

The major new role for a male actor will be the villain. As we understand it, he’s supposed to be Bryan Cranston-like, to the point that Cranston himself has had words with the studio about taking the role. We don’t know just yet if he said yes, or if this is an all-new character or somebody from continuity, but because they’re shooting for Cranston we at least know the filmmakers want to bring the intensity.
